Project Gutenberg, the complete Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation, is a non-profit organization (since 2000) that maintains an electronic library of public domain works, digitized or converted into eBooks by volunteers and downloaded from the Company’s website at www.

 

History

 On July 4, 1971, the project was launched by Michael Hart, a student at the University of Illinois at Art. The school computer system was designe for free distribution. Typing Declaration of Independence established. He soon followed the writings of William Shakespeare and the Bible. The copyright of any book published before 1923 did not expire after 75 years, during which time it entered the public domain. Any work published between 1923 and 1977 holds its copyright for 95 years. Any work published in subsequent years expires 70 years after the death of the copyright author or 95 years after publication in the case of corporate work.

Over the next 20 years, Hart transcribed nearly 100 books before the spread of the Internet, causing widespread international interest. The project has hundreds and then thousands of volunteers worldwide and has undertaken more administrative tasks, including fundraising to maintain the Hart website. The number of public works scanned (the early 1990s) or gradually increased. Although there are versions in HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) or PDF (Portable Document Format) of Adobe Systems Incorporate for some works, all works are available in plain text using simple ASCII characters that do not have limited typography and images.

In 2000 the Charles Franks Project established Distributed Proofreaders, a web-based program for translating scanned texts for proofreading for Gutenberg. Distributed proofreaders became part of Project Gutenberg in 2002. The ability to distribute proofreading work among NGOs was reported in 2002 by Slashdot, a leading technology website. As the word spread, hundreds of teams formed to scan and proofread new assignments. As of 2009, half of the project Gutenberg books have been conducted using distributed proofreaders.

 

Project Gutenberg as the publisher

Project Gutenberg does not promise or implement any specific source material. We usually create each eBook from one print book, but sometimes multiple print books are use. Even with the print book, we made many changes: modernization of spelling, dehumidification, conversion to HTML or other formats, etc. Therefore, although the print sources we use come from former publishers, we are publishers of our ebooks.

Sometimes an ebook contains a reference to its source. However, it is by no means intended that our ebooks be identical to that source print book like a nursing assignment help

 

How do I cite work?

MLA Style recommended naming the Project Gutenberg book as a website page: 

Author surname, author first name. “Title of book.” Project Gutenberg, publication/update date,

URL.

 

The Chicago Style * Project Gutenberg book recommends the following:

 Author First Name Author Last Name, Book Title (Original Publication Location, Original Publication)

 Date; Project Gutenberg, publication date), chapter number, URL.

  

APA style recommends referring to the Project Gutenberg book as an ebook:

Author surname, first letters of the author. Title of the book. Project Gutenberg, publication date.
